Well,

unfortunatly no wind whatsoever… So instead of sailing and trying to keep our awsome first position in the ranking (I am dreaming here….) we ended up grinding and painting the boom…

I`m not saying this is no fun, not at all by the way and right now I`m just fighting with getting a sticker design for our boom, but I am certainly looking much forward to sailing again next weekend!

Winterseries 2012/2013 First Regatta

Sonntag, Dezember 2nd, 2012

With Stan still enjoying Vietnam, we were in desperate need for a helmsman and Falco –
our friend, trainer and honorary crew member joined us from far Germany for the first two
races of the 2012/2013 winter series on the Braassem.
The weather was awesome, a bit on the cold side, but with sun and moderate wind.
With Falco on board we were very curious what we could achieve and full of as
aspiration we started with some maneuver training (but honestly as the vote was for
cappuccino and against more training not too much) and went quiet happy with the little
but good result to the first start. Audrey on the bow gave timing together with Clive on the
jib, me on the main trying to keep the overview and Falco on the helm was just staying
cool and doing everything perfectly right and showed a masterpiece on fine steering.

With this set up we started our first race (one out of two of this first winter series day) – the
start a bit towards the middle, a first and a half row start, but with clear wind.
On the first crossing we knew already that we were not bad – having most of the fleet
crossing behind us and on the first mark rounding we knew we are in for the struggle of the
first places…
What a great feeling. Trying not to make any mistakes, we took it very conservative,
taking down the spi well in advance, loosing same places, just to gain them again on the
downwind with Falco’s great sense for the wind. We kept pace and could cross the finish
line second, just a tiny bit after the J Kantorbutler.

Full of energy (not yet of Glühwein though) we went head over heals to the second race
(realizing that our starting flag was already up with no idea where in the starting sequence
we where…). We more or less managed to synchronies with plus minus 5 seconds on the
last minute and had a medium successful start. Still, we managed to come up just on the
edge of the first third of the fleet at the buoy…
Now the miracle happened with Falco’s sense for wind, jybing immediately we had a
different approach than the other boats and Falco was just feeling the wind: head up
– down a bit and we were flying – just grabbing all the lanes of wind appearing, in the
low wind we had a huge advantage. And see, we were first on the downwind mark!
Jabbadabbadoo! And well – this we didn’t let burn any more, a bit less conservative and
with good maneuvers, excellent team work and fantastic steering we just about finished
first and were on top of the ranking!
What a great racing day!

Thanks Audrey, Clive and of course Falco! See you again soon;)

Cooling Down 2012

Sonntag, Dezember 2nd, 2012

The cooling down was meant as a new experience with me helming for the first time
(shared with Thomas Gutenstein from the famous Jay2Play). With Stan in Vietnam for
holidays Audrey was complemented the otherwise German crew.

The weather was to say it politely – on the ugly side… Cold, rain and wind, but that is
sailing as well, not of much use to complain 🙂
Of course there were no miracles to be expected, 50 kg short on the rail, a new crew
and me on the helm (by far the most limiting factor I admit). But even that – after a short
discussion it was decided that I would stay on the helm and we would just go for it.
The result was adequate, not last, but also not far away from the it and around this result
all our four races were pendling on this day, but nevertheless I learned a lot and hopefully
so did the rest. And of course we had Glühwein to keep the spirit up…

A bit frozen, yet not in a bad mood (as the results did not show us last) we went with
another German team for fine pizza in Leiden to cheer to sailing and our Js!

The next morning however was more difficult – Thomas felt a bit sick and because of
upcoming holidays and the conditions, he did not want to sail – heavy hearted Audrey and
me were releasing him home. We still tried to get out with the two of us, but with the wind
picking up this try was quickly abandoned again… So we just stayed craning and looking
forward to the next events.

Cheers
